The Process to become an official via SFOA is quite simple and pain-free. The idea is that your training comes from experience. You must work at least two years of youth officiating before you can progress to the high school varsity level. After that, your career path is only limited by how bad you want to move to the NCAA or beyond. Apply via SFOA, Jessica Lundsford Act screening Pay SFOAA and FHSAA fees Attend training meetings. The Cost to become an official with SFOA is a lot less wallet-intensive than you might think. Below are all of the costs associated with becoming an official. When you compare this to the money you make in just one weekend (~$75+), you can see that you will recoup your monetary investment quite quickly.

  • SFOA – $20/year

  • Uniform ~$170 for everything

The time commitment for the most part, is up to your desire to officiate. If you want to just do youth football on Saturdays, that’s fine. If you want to officiate close to your home, that’s fine. If you want to officiate as much as possible, we will work with you to meet your goals. After becoming a SFOA member, the only mandatory time commitment is attendance of weekly (Monday early evening) training meetings.

For New Officials:

1. Official must contact Booking Commissioner and let Booking Commissioner know they would like to be evaluated. The Booking Commissioner will book the official with a senior official in the upcoming weeks.

2. Booking Commissioner will contact the evaluation committee and let them know who is going to be evaluated.

3. The official is responsible for getting evaluation form to the proper official evaluating their game.

4. Evaluation form must be filled out, and signed by senior official doing the evaluation. The official being evaluated is responsible for getting evaluation to the evaluation committee.

5. Evaluation committee will go over evaluations and send to the board and give their recommendation of Promote, Stay at Rank of and provide feed back for official.

Criteria for new officials:

Rank 1 to Rank 2: Evaluated during Three (3) little league games.

Rank 2 to Rank 3: Evaluated during Three (3) little league games.

Rank 3 to Rank 4: Evaluated during One (1) little league game and Two (2) little league varsity Peewee/Midget games and/or High School Junior Varsity game(s).
